9 Highlights from 2023

Dec 21, 2023 9:09:04 AM / by Caitlin Carlton

As we wrap up the year, let’s embark on a journey through the highlights at Qwasar for 2023—a year marked by multiple launches and new partnerships. Here are 9 highlights and stories that we're celebrating:

1. Launch of a Ground Breaking Dual Master-Apprenticeship Program

This year, we created the nation’s first Dual Master-Apprenticeship Program! Following a growing trend in North America for credit-bearing and degree-bearing apprenticeship programs, we’re the first company to offer a Master’s degree instead of a Bachelor’s degree. This reflects the high bar that many tech apprenticeship programs demand, and the growing demand for degrees despite a push to skills-based hiring. The program is the first of its kind and offers aspiring tech professionals a unique blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. Under the mentorship of seasoned industry experts, participants not only gain exposure to cutting-edge technologies but also develop practical skills through real-world projects while earning a degree.

The Dual Master-Apprenticeship Program not only enhances employability but also contributes to the cultivation of well-rounded tech professionals prepared to navigate the challenges of the modern workforce. It also renders post-graduate degrees much more affordable through an earn-and-learn model.

2. Launch of a Master's in Computer Science

Knowing that bootcamps would eventually decline, and seeing a strategic opportunity we had long wished to pursue, Qwasar launched a Master's of Science in Computer Science program late this year in partnership with Woolf. This offers eligible learners the opportunity to switch from Qwasar’s Certificate Programs to a Master’s program while gaining credit for previous work completed at Qwasar.

The program is competitively priced for a Master’s degree, but to make the program affordable, Qwasar has a suite of scholarships available. Most applicants receive a scholarship with the average scholarship amount being ~$15K.

3. African Development University, Our Niger Partner Campus, Wins Coding Tournament

Our partnership with the African Development University (ADU) in Niger has yielded impressive results, with ADU recently securing victory in a coding tournament. This triumph not only showcases the talent emerging from ADU but also underscores the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between educational institutions and industry leaders. The success in the coding competition serves as a testament to the quality of education and practical skills development fostered by ourselves and our partner institutions.

The implications of ADU's victory extend beyond accolades, influencing the trajectory of students' careers and bolstering the partnership's significance in fostering local talent. By excelling in external competitions, ADU students not only validate the efficacy of their education but also contribute to elevating the reputation of the institution.

5. Selected for the Prestigious JFFLabs Entrepreneur in Residence Cohort

Our dynamic engagement in the JFFLabs Entrepreneur in Residence Cohort has been instrumental in incubating and accelerating innovative solutions aligned with our mission. This collaboration underscores our commitment to staying on the cutting edge of technology education, leveraging the resources and expertise offered by JFFLabs to propel early-stage ideas into impactful initiatives, namely increasing the number of apprenticeships in advanced fields. Working closely with JFFLabs has not only amplified our innovative endeavors but has also positioned us as a key player in driving positive transformations within the tech education landscape.

Jennifer Robertson, COO of Qwasar, played a significant role in this collaboration. By sharing insights on how these evolving skill sets contribute to success in the tech industry, we reinforced our commitment to providing not just education but a strategic roadmap for learners to thrive in the ever-changing tech ecosystem. The Demo Day presentation signifies a broader dedication to thought leadership and active participation in shaping the narrative of the future of tech careers.

6. Participated in AIR and CompTIA Apprenticeship Cohort

Acknowledging the pivotal role apprenticeships play in addressing the tech talent shortage, we are proud to set a high standard in advanced engineering apprenticeships. These apprenticeships span across critical domains such as software engineering, AI/ML engineering, DevOps engineering, and more, reflecting our commitment to developing expertise in cutting-edge technologies.

We are honored to collaborate with the American Institutes for Research (AIR) as part of the CompTIA Apprenticeships for Tech Initiative. This partnership is a testament to our dedication to creating additional apprenticeships and expanding opportunities for highly skilled, non-traditional talent within the tech industry. By participating in this initiative, we aim not only to meet the industry's growing demands for skilled professionals but also to contribute actively to the development of a diverse and dynamic workforce that reflects the evolving needs of the tech landscape. 8. We Launched in Southeast Asia and India via Campus Partners

Adding to our existing presence on the continent, we’re delighted to say we launched programs this year in Southeast Asia with Dichi Academy, and also in India with WOJ Education.

Dichi Academy is led by Chanda, a fellow UC Berkeley alum with an extensive background in international business, strategy, and more.

WOJ Education is an initiative of the “Grandmother of Silicon Valley” Esther Wojcicki, an award-winning educator and author.

9. The Annual Holiday Escape Game Was a Hit Yet Again

In the spirit of fostering creativity and holiday cheer, we hosted the second annual Holiday Virtual Escape Game! As participants engaged in this challenge, they uncovered cleverly hidden clues in digital formats to “escape” their virtual room. The highlight of this collaborative endeavor is an engaging and interactive experience designed to showcase the teamwork and problem-solving abilities of our students (and frankly, encourage a hacking spirit!!).

We invite you to try the 2023 Holiday Escape Game!

We're Looking Forward to 2024
